Emily’s recent work references urban gardens and public parks, especially low water or drought resilient ones, which, in California, are increasingly common and environmentally relevant. She takes photographs and makes sketches of these urban spaces and paints them in her studio, creating a pared down visual language to represent these organic forms.

Emily appreciates gardens as creative expressions of their makers, and also how they can take on an unwieldy life of their own. She grew up watching her mom garden, but did not pursue gardening as a hobby herself until the pandemic.

Emily was born and raised in San Francisco and has a BA in Fine Art from UCLA. She currently lives in the Richmond District of San Francisco with her husband, two kids, and a cat. She enjoys gardening, reading, and long walks.
